De tok over hennes hjemgård Sørgården Malum omkring 1745.
| Haugen, Zakarias Hansen (I1193)

| ___ OLINE HANSDATTER HØVE (born SØPSTAD) born 05.12.1888 on Nypsletten, Leinstrand, Trøndelag, Norway. She was baptized on 10 February 1889 in Leinstrand church. She was the fifth child of Hans Altsen Olstad Søpstad, b 18.12.1818, d 01.04.1895, and Berit Andersdatter Hanger, b 30.06.1861, d 27.01.1927. Oline had one sister (Hansdatter Søpstad, b 12.05.1883, d 12.05.1883) and three brothers Albert Olaf Hansen Søpstad, b 30.11.1880, d 30.06.1964, Karl Marius Hansen Søpstad, b 19.10.1884, d 07.01.1885 and Karl Marius Hansen Søpstad b 11.04.1886, d 01.06.1939. Oline also had a half-brother, Johan Herman Ludvigsen Værnes, b 05.12.1888, d 18.11.1931, whom the mother had with Ludvig Olsen Værnes. In addition, she had 4 half-brothers that her father had before he married Berit, see page 17. Oline was 6 years old when her father Hans Altsen died and 38 years old when her mother, Berit Andersdatter, died. On 12 August 1912, Oline married Petter Olsen Høve (b 03.07.1892, d 08.07.1957) in Melhus church. She was 23 and Petter 20 at the time. From 1917 she lived on Langstein, Trøndelag. Oline died of cancer 15.04.1931 on Lauvlund, aged 42. Buried 25.04.1931, Skatval church. Her husband Petter died on 08.07.1957, 26 years after her. Oline's mother was young when she became a widow When Oline was born, the family had just moved from the farm Søraunet in Saupstad to Nypsletten in Leinstrand. Her father worked as a cobbler and was 70 when Oline was born, her mother 27. So there was a very big age difference between the parents. On Nypsletten there were only a couple of acres for potato land, no grazing rights or other rights. So the family depended on the additional income her father was able to obtain as a cobbler to get by. It seems that age began to affect Oline's father's ability to work and he was unable to provide enough income for the family and they had to ask for support from the social welfare service. Oline's father died on 01.04.1895, aged 76, and her mother, Berit, became a widow at the age of 33 and alone to support the children. Oline was then 6 years old, Karl 9 years old and Albert 14 years old. In the father's estate, there was not much help to be had for a family that was already dependent on social welfare care: «The constitution of the estate: The owner of the Nypsletten farm, who owes so much that the estate will only benefit approx. NOK 300,- ($30). The furniture and fixtures were worn and unusable. The social welfare service has partially supported the family.» At that time, families who became financially incapacitated mainly had to get help from their family or neighbours. Oline's mother had no close relatives to lean on. Her father had died - and her mother and siblings had emigrated to America. Another option that was quite common for widows and widowers was to remarry. So when Oline's widowed mother fell in love with a handsome fellow from Stjørdal, it made the situation easier for her. Her mother became engaged in 1896 to the divorced watchmaker from Stjørdal, Ludvig Olsen Værnes (b 07.03.1859, d 26.06.1916), and they were to marry. In the autumn of 1896, her mother became pregnant and on 16 May 1897 she gave birth to a son, Johan Herman Ludvigsen. Oline and her siblings were accommodated But family happiness didn't last long. The watchmaker was not to be trusted. He ran away from responsibility and Oline's mother was left alone to support another child. It became a hopeless situation for the family and the betrayal by the child's father was humiliating for Oline's mother. She became deeply depressed and was admitted to Rotvold asylum. The authorities intervened and the children were taken from her and accommodated on farms in the area. Oline's brother, Karl (aged 11), was accommodated to the farm Bleke in Melhus. Big brother Albert (17 years) to the farm Brubakk in Melhus and her half-brother Johan Herman (1 year) to the farm Hegstad Søndre in Leinstrand. Oline was 9 years old at the time and was probably accommodated to the Lund farm in Leinstrand. I assume that, because in the 1900 census (dated 03.12) she was living there. She was 12 years old and a «tjeneste-jente» on the Lund farm. Lund is located by Lundåsen between Ringvold and Heimdal in Trondheim. In 1900, there were 9 permanent residents on the farm. The farmer was Jonas Larsen, born 1868. He lived with his parents, sister and 3 children. His wife was probably dead. On the farm there were also a «dreng» = young boy helping the farmer. Being accommodated on a farm was a common way of caring for children from families who did not have relatives to care for them. It must have been a very dramatic event for the children. It is probably likely that Oline and her siblings were well looked after by the farmer's family, but there is nothing that can replace the security and community they had in their family. Oline falls in love and returns the tickets to America Oline was confirmed on 18 October 1903, aged 14, in Leinstrand church. She got a grade of 2.5 in Christian knowledge and 2 in Order and behavior. At the confirmation, she still lived on the Lund farm. Her mother was then discharged from Rotvold and also lived on Lund. Both were registered with Lund as «surname». At that time, it was common for young girls to work as «tjeneste-jente» after they had been confirmed. Oline had already worked for some years as «tjeneste-jente» on the Lund farm. I'm not sure how long she stayed on Lund. It is likely that all the siblings lived in the Melhus area in the years between 1900 and 1908 because contact between them was maintained. In 1908 her brother Karl emigrated to America and I have found a postcard he sent to Oline from Proctor in Minnesota in 1910. This proves that they kept in touch even though they lived on different farms. In the 1910 census, Oline was 22 years old and worked as «tjeneste-jente» on the farm Melhus. There were 6 permanent residents on the farm, all unmarried. The head and farmer was Martin N. Melhus, born 15.07.1882. At the same time, Petter Høve also worked at Melhus, so it was probably there that they met. He was a «tjeneste-gutt» = boy in service, an apprentice in farm work. When they met, Oline had planned to emigrate to America with her brother Albert and his wife Gurine, and their two young children. Albert was already in America and had bought tickets. But Oline was so in love with Petter that she chose to stay at home. Petter clearly had no plans to emigrate, even though 6 of his siblings had emigrated to America. Oline was to be a traveling companion for her sister-in-law and her two small children. When Oline did not want to travel, her sister-in-law did not find the courage to travel alone across «The Pond» with two small children. Thus it was that Albert returned and established his family in Norway. Oline and Petter bought a farm at Langstein Oline and Petter became engaged and then married 12.07.1912 in Melhus church. After they married, they lived with Petter's parents on Nergården at Lyngen in Lundamo, Trøndelag. Petter helped his father with the farm work – in addition to being a construction worker on the railway. On 6 February 1914 they had their first child, Klara, and on 5 August the following year their son Herman was born. He was probably named after Oline's half-brother, Johan Herman. When Petter's father handed over Nergården to an older brother of Petter's, they chose to move. In 1917, Petter bought the farm Risholt Nordre (gnr 9, bnr 1) on Langstein in Stjørdal municipality, Trøndelag, and the family moved there. Petter's parents also accompanied the moving load. Petter bought the farm for NOK 7,500 ($750). The following year, he entered into an agreement on «kår» for his parents, who were then around 70 years old. An agreement on «kår» ensured the parents the right to live on the farm the rest of their lives. This was the usual way of securing a pension for the parents. The agreement was registered and thus valid if the farm was sold to others. The summer of 1919 was a turning point for the young family In the winter of 1919, Oline contracted pneumonia while she was pregnant with her third child. On 6 July 1919, she gave birth to a stillborn child in a painful and long delivery – where the child was taken with forceps. From the medical record, one can read: «After the forceps delivery, there must have been something wrong with the uterus – has sought several doctors for this, – has been depressed about this, as she thinks she will not get well again.» Oline became more and more depressed after the birth. Through the winter of 1920 the spark of life disappeared and the doctor described her situation like this: «She must be looked after as you cannot be safe from suicide.» In March 1920, the district doctor thought it best to admit her to Rotvold hospital where she stayed until Christmas 1920. This was dramatic for the family and Petter was left alone with two small children aged 4 and 6 and his aging parents. Before Christmas 1920, their son Herman also fell ill and was admitted to Innherred Hospital in Levanger. In addition, they were influenced by external conditions. In the wake of the First World War, Norway was thrown into a series of economic crises. Banks and businesses went bankrupt, municipalities were placed under government administration and many farmers had to sell their farms. This led to Petter dividing the farm in two in 1921, where he kept a smaller part himself. He sold the main farm Risholt Nordre for NOK 13,000 ($1,300). Oline and Petter named their new farm Lauvlund (meaning a grove of deciduous trees). The slightly warm and romantic name, Lauvlund, was chosen because the farm yard was built next to a birch grove. I interpret the name to mean that Oline and Petter had faith in the future – and envisioned creating a safe and good life for themselves and their family on the farm. Oline and Petter had to build up the new farm from scratch Oline and Petter cannot have lacked enthusiasm and courage when they set about establishing their new home on Lauvlund. There were difficult times in the country and that perhaps motivated them extra. They had to build the farm from scratch. Admittedly, they took over land that had been farmed for many years, but a new dwelling house, barn and carriage house – and storehouse – had to be built. Tools and livestock also had to be bought. At that time, it was not unusual to buy entire houses from other farms, and so did Petter. The residence was originally a timber summerhouse of the neighboring farm Risholt Nordre. They dismantled the house, moved it up the hills to Lauvlund where they rebuilt it. The timber for the barn apparently came from a timber forge on the neighboring farm Risholt Søndre. It was also moved to Lauvlund and set up there. They built hay barns above the barn. Petter's father was a skilled carpenter and certainly contributed a lot, even though he was 72 at the time. When the barn was finished, there was room for a horse, 2–3 cows, a couple of pigs, 5–6 sheep, chickens and a rooster. The first years on Lauvlund were characterized by a lot of work to build houses and farm buildings – in addition to running the farm, which was the very basis of life. Lauvlund was a small agricultural property, even by the conditions of the time. An average farm in Trøndelag around 1920 was approx. 70,000 square meters of arable land, while at Lauvlund it was possible to cultivate up to 20,000 square meters. If all the areas were utilized to the maximum. Little Herman becomes seriously ill The first 6 years on the farm were probably very demanding for Oline and Petter. Oline had her aging mother and Petter's aging parents living on Lauvlund. Their son Herman probably also had poor health and in the winter of 1924 he was affected by meningitis. There was no way to save him and he was only 8 1/2 years old when he died on 13 February 1924. Petter's father also had failing health and died about a month later. He died on March 30 of «old age», aged 74. Three years later, in 1927, the family was again struck by death. Oline's mother, Berit, who had probably moved into Lauvlund a couple of years earlier, contracted cancer and died on 27 January 1927, aged 65. Just one month later, on 1 March, Petter's mother also died of old age, aged 79. Oline got pregnant again Fortunately for me and my descendants, Oline was still fertile after the dramatic birth in the summer of 1919. In the late summer of 1924, Oline became pregnant, and on 5 April 1925 she gave birth to a viable son, Odd Peder (my father), at Lauvlund. Odd was baptized in Skatval church on 14 June 1925. Sponsors were Oline's half-brother Herman Værnes and his wife Astrid, farmer's son and neighbor Ole O. Løvås and Oline's sister-in-law Borghild Søpstad. In order for the family to manage, Petter had to take odd jobs. He had a versatile background from practical work which came in handy. Petter had done farm work, construction work, spent several winters in the timber forest and worked as a carpenter and was a skilled craftsman. By the end of the 1920s, they had become a small family of four. Their daughter Klara was confirmed and certainly participated in all «women's work» on the farm. The son Odd was active and willing to learn and followed his father in his daily chores. The family had made it through some challenging years. Oline was affected by cancer Throughout the winter of 1931, Oline got ill and she became weaker and weaker. The doctor found that she had cancer and there was no treatment for this at the time. She died on April 15, aged 42. Petter and Oline had been married for 19 years when Oline died on Lauvlund in 1931. Oline and Petter had 4 children 1. Klara Høve, b 06.02.1914, d 27.02.1993. Born on Lyngen in Horg, Trøndelag. She grew up in Langstein, Stjørdal. Married in Skatval church on 08.01.1941 to Signolf Sivertsvik, b 02.04.1911, d 22.08.1976, from Langstein. Sponsors were Lars Aune, Albert Søpstad, Iver Høve, Hilde Høve and Anne Løhre. 3. Pettersen Høve, b 06.07.1919, d 06.07.1919. Stillborn boy. The birth was reported to the church by Petter's father Ole on 7 July 1919. 4. Odd Peder Høve, (my father) b 05.04.1925, d 07.01.2008. Born on Lauvlund, Langstein and grew up there. Margit had two children from a previous marriage, Frank and Marit Hildegunn. Baptized in Skatval church 14.06.1925. Sponsors were construction worker Johan Herman Værnes and wife Astrid, Stjørdal, farmer's son Ole O.
