- JOHAN HERMAN LUDVIGSEN VÆRNES was born 16.05.1897 at Nypsletten, Leinstrand. He was the first child of Ludvig Olsen Værnes, b 07.03.1859, d 26.06.1916, and Berit Andersdatter Hanger, b 30.06.1861, d 27.01.1927. He had three half-siblings Oline Hansdatter Søpstad, b 05.12.1888, d 15.04.1931, Albert Olaf Hansen Søpstad, b 30.11.1880, d 30.06.1964 and Karl Marius Hansen Søpstad, b 11.04.1886, d 01.06.1939. He also had five half-siblings from his father's children with several women, see page 47.
He was baptized in Leinstrand church on 04.07.1897. Sponsors were farmer Bengt Larsen Seneppen and his wife Oline Iversdatter, «pige» Kari J. Klæt, «pige» Berit Kr. Seneppen, bachelor Olaf J. Skotvold, bachelor Sivert Olaus Skjerve. The following was listed in the church register: «Parents' names: Divorced watchmaker Ludvig Olsen Vernes from Nedre Stjørdalen and Widow Berit Andersdatter Nypsletten. Parents' place of residence: Nypan. The father was born in 1859». The note stated: «The mother's assignment: His 4th child out of wedlock, her first out of wedlock».
Herman was 19 when his father, Ludvig, died. His mother Berit died when Herman was 29 years old.
Herman married I in Steinkjer church on 22.04.1919 to Astrid Johanne Vikan, b 27.02.1899, d 28.05.1979. Astrid was born in Stadsbygda, Trødnelag, but lived in Steinkjer, Trøndelag, when they married. He was 21 years old and she was 20 years old then.
He had a son with Astrid Johanne: Herman Jr. Værnes, b 30.09.1919, d 07.06.1987.
Herman married II at the City Clark’s office in Trondheim in December 1941 to Inghild Elisabeth Hammeren, b 19.03.1897, d 24.12.1969. Inghild Elisabeth (born Rønne) was from Kristiansund, Møre og Romsdal County. She was divorced and lived in Trondheim when they married. Both were 44 years old at the time.
Herman died on 18 November 1961 in Trondheim, aged 64. His first wife Astrid Johanne died 17 years after him. His second wife Inghild Elisabeth died 8 years after him.
Herman was accommodated early on
When Herman was born, the family lived on Nypsletten in Leinstrand near Trondheim. He was born out of wedlock. His parents had planned to marry, but his father ran away from Herman's mother. That put his mother in a very difficult situation. She was left alone to support the newborn boy and the three she had from her marriage to Hans Altsen, who died two years earlier.
Herman's mother felt the betrayal by her husband-to-be very humiliating. In addition, it put her in a difficult financial situation. She became completely dependent on the social welfare service and the children were taken from her and accommodated on farms in the area. The whole situation became too much for Herman's mother to bear and she became deeply depressed. The district doctor admitted her to Rotvold asylum in the summer of 1898. Herman was then 1 year old and was abandoned on the farm Hegstad Søndre (bnr 48, bnr 6) in Trondheim (then Leinstrand municipality). At the census in 1900, he was still on the farm and registered as Hermand Værnes, foster child of farmer Hendrik Haagensen (b 1862) and farmer's wife Marie Endresdatter (b 1863).
Herman was 4 years old when his mother was discharged on 01.03.1901. I am not sure how much he was allowed to be with his mother, but when his sister Oline was confirmed in 1903, she was accommodated at the farm Lund near Heimdal. Herman's mother also lived there. Perhaps Herman also lived with his mother and sister? Based on the medical record of Herman's mother, Berit, it appears that she had to live a wandering life on several farms in the area. I have no information about whether the children lived with her all the time. But contact between the siblings seems to have been maintained, because I have found postcards sent to sister Oline from all her brothers in the period 1910–12.
I have not found more information about where Herman lived until 1910 census, then he was 13 years old. He was then a foster son, supported by the social welfare on the farm Sørem (gnr 33, bnr 1) by Flatåsen in Trondheim (then Leinstrand municipality). The farmer was Edvard Valsø (b 16.09.1873) and the farmer's wife Gjertrud Valsø (b 04.04.1874). They had 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys, aged 0–6.
Herman achived a phenomenal record on the ski jumping hill
Perhaps it was when he lived in Sørem that skiing caught his interest. There was snowy and plenty of opportunities to play on the slopes. Herman became a very skilled ski jumper and Nordic combined athlete and I have found many newspaper clippings where he is mentioned among the best in Trøndelag at senior level. He also took part in the Norwegian championship where he asserted himself very well and was referred to as one of the highlights:
He is mentioned i.a. in an advance review in Trønder-Avisa 18.02.1921 of the main national race in Gråkallen: «The race promises to have an excellent participation and most of the country's elite troops will take part». Herman is mentioned as one of the previous prize winners in previous main national races that were held in Holmenkollen, Oslo, and Gråkallen, Trondheim.
In March 1923, Herman took part in the Namdal race and won the Ladies' Cup, when he won the Nordic combined competition.
That Herman was a very skilled ski jumper is evidenced by a mention in Nidaros on 26.02.1925. There is a preview of the «Stiftsrennet in Namsos» with a picture of the jumping hill «...which is known as one of the country's biggest hills with Herman Værnes' phenomenal record of 57 m.»
10.–11. March 1923 he took part in the Stjørdal regional race with over 1,000 spectators. He won the cross-country race over 18 km in a time of 1.08.38 on Saturday and the ski jump in Kinnsethbakken at Liavannet on Sunday. The jumps were described as follows: 1st round: 34.5 m good stretch, good forward. 2nd round: 33 m, nice and calm. «It was a very successful showjumping race with consistently excellent performances and a very low percentage of falls». Nasjonalbladet 12.03.1923, p 2.
In the newspaper Arbeiderbladet from 18.03.1924, there was a news report that Herman took part in the «national skiing event» at Steinkjer and came second after nationally renowned Johan Grøttumsbråten, who won the Holmenkollen medal that year.
In the newspaper Trøndelagen, there was a large spread across the entire front page about the Gråkallrennet 1931 in Trondheim. The arena was full of spectators who encircled the ski jump when the race took place. Herman is then mentioned among the «old guys» and he was barely beaten. He delivered two powerful jumps of 45.5 m and touched the record on the jumping hill that Sigmund Ruud from Kongsberg had set the year before.
Herman represented several clubs during his career: Leinstrand was the parent club where he was until he represented Namsos from 1922. From 1925 he represented Melhus and in 1930–31 Strindens IL and from 1932 Freidig. The last results I have found are from 1936, when he was 39 years old and still an active ski jumper. I am a little unsure whether the club changes say anything about where he lived, because when he represented Namsos and Melhus he lived in Stjørdal.
Herman found his love at Steinkjer
Herman married 22.04.1919 in Steinkjer church to Astrid Johanne Vikan, born at Stadsbygd, Trøndelag, 27.02.1899. He was listed as Johan Herman Værnes, born in Leinstrand and confirmed there in 1912, worked as a carpenter living in Heimdal, Trondheim, she as a driver's daughter living in Steinkjer, Trøndelag. Herman's father was listed in the church register as «Watchmaker Ludvig Værnes».
In the 1920 census, Herman lived in Stjørdal with his wife Astrid, a son and a foster son, Erling Vikan, b 13.11.1916 in Steinkjer. Erling's father was «woodworker» Ole Halvorsen Rise, born 1896, living in Steinkjer. The foster son was his wife Astrid's son from a relationship before she married Herman. The son Herman Jr. was born in Steinkjer on 30.09.1919 and baptized on 02.11.1919. Sponsors were H. M Kvam and wife Signy, Johan Vikan and wife Anna. They are probably Astrid's parents because she was born Vikan. Herman and his wife then lived in Kongens gate 123, Steinkjer, and he was a «Chauffeur».
In 1925, Herman and his wife were godparents to their nephew Odd Peder Høve (my father).
When Herman's mother, Berit, died in 1927, Herman was listed in the death certificate as one of the heirs, and was living in Stjørdal.
Divorced and new wife
Herman was divorced from his wife Astrid sometime between 1926–30. His wife «divorced Astrid Johanne Wikan» married 09.02.1931 in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, to merchant Karl Robert Ramberg, b 18.05.1896, d 17.08.1979, Steinkjer. Astrid's residential address was Stjørdal.
During the period he was divorced, he was not active in ski competitions. In any case, he is not mentioned on the results lists throughout the seasons 1927–29. The divorce was probably the reason for this, because from 1930 he was active again – until 1936.
What he worked on and where he lived after his divorce is not entirely known. But he remarried in December 1941. He was a blacksmith then, so perhaps he had worked for his half-brother Albert, who ran a blacksmith business in Melhus. In «Norsk Lysingsblad» 24.11.1941, p 3, it is published for blacksmith Johan Herman Wærnes and housewife Inghild Elisabeth Hammeren, both Gamle Kirkevei 10, Trondheim. They got married at the City Clerk's office in Trondheim. There are also announcements in both «Adresseavisen» (p 3) and «Dagsposten» (p 4) 08.01.1942: «Blacksmith Johan Herman Wærnes and Inghild Elisabeth Hammeren». They married in December, perhaps New Year's Eve 1941. She had the surname Rønne when she was born in Kristiansund on 19 March 1897. She died on 24 December 1969 in Trondheim. They had no children, but she had four children with her first husband. When she died, she used the surname Wærnes. Buried at Lademoen cemetery, Trondheim, in a common grave with his daughter Ildrid and Ildrid
According to Arngrim Søpstad (grandson of Herman's half-brother Albert), Herman and Inghild lived for a time in the 50s in their attic at Strinda. Arngrim has described him as «a lively fellow and fond of a drink - and good at telling stories».
He was 64 when he died on 18.11.1961. Death announcement in «Adresseavisen» 23.11.1961, p 18. In the register «Deaths in Norway» Herman was entered as «Herman Johan Wernes», but in the death advertisement Herman Wærnes is used. In written sources, many different name variations are used for his surname.
In Herman's death advertisement it says: «My dear husband, our good father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and uncle». Herman only had one son, so «our good father» indicates that it is Inghild's children from her first marriage, or was it the foster son Erling? The half-brother Albert and his children are also mentioned in the advertisement as brother, nieces and nephews.
___
Foreldrenes bosted: Nypan. Faren var født 1859.
Faddere: Gårdbruker Bengt Larsen Seneppen og hustru Oline Iversdatter, tjenestepike Kari J. Klæt, tjenestepike Berit Kr. Seneppen, ungkar Olaf J. Skotvold, ungkar Sivert Olaus Skjerve.
Dødsfallannonse i Adressa 23.11.1961.
