    • Julius Klemmetsen Høstland, f 24.12.1863 i Høstlandet.

      MEMOARER:
Julius og Berits datter Lottie Johnston har skrevet følgende memoarer om sine foreldre:
"Memories of my Mother and Father (Julius Klemetsen and Bertha Larsen).

I remember so well about my childhood days. We had a very happy home and a good home. My mother was so good natured. My father also was a good man. I remember a Rev. Christensen who confirmed me. I remember learning my catechism in Norwegian. We went to meetings in the morning and Sunday School in the afternoon and church at night. We never looked around to see people coming in the door. We were not allowed to do that. We learned our catechism in the basement. We had a relative by the name of Pedersen and Mrs. Pedersons' grandfather Hugidolf. He was very dark. His daughter Marie played the pipe organ for thirty years. They had two boys, Pearly and Adolf.

My dad was in charge of the nitric acid and sulphuric plant for Dupont Dynamite Co. When we had bad snow storms in the winter, my dad carried us to school which was just a half a block away. One day I was playing with my friend. We jumped from our fence into a snow drift and my mother had to shovel us out.

I remember one morning my mother was crying. She didn't want my dad to go to work because she had had a dream that there was an explosion at the plant. He went to work anyway and while we were at school (The Garfield School in Washburn Wisconsin) there was a terrible explosion at the plant and the panes in the windows at the school were flying all over the place. We left the school and went home. The men that worked at the plant had to take the train to work so my mother took us to the train and waited there until the news came that dad was Okay. But my cousin Arnold Hostland was killed and two of his friends. They were buried in the same coffin because there was nothing but dust left of them.

We went to Washburn in Aug 1976 and saw the grave where my mother was buried and my little brother who died of bronchitis as a child (Peter Morris). It was a big plot and my cousin who died in the explosion was buried there too. My mother lost her right arm and later died in 1911.

My father was transferred to Upper Michigan at Senter. We lived at Dollar Bay, just a small town but a very beautiful place. When we lived in Michigan ( I was about 14) and my sister and I were outside one night and the sailors were docked not far from our place. They always passed our house. My sister Ingrid and I were talking and laughing with these boys and my father came out. He sure told those boys off and Ingrid and I got the first licking we ever had.

We stayed there until 1916 when my father became sick. He went to the doctor and he told him that the fumes were not good for him. My uncle Matt Hostland wrote and wanted my Dad to come to Alberta, so we came to Alderson, Alberta. We couldn't get over having no trees or water. Matt met us with a big wagon and we laughed so much at the horses big feet. They were Clydesdales. When we got to his farm, the gophers were all over the place and we thought they were rats as we had lots of rats in Michigan. George was only 6 years old then and we couldn't find him. We thought he was lost down the well. They took a mirror to see if they could see him. We were all worried but he had strayed away to one of the neighbors. How he found their place we didn't know. George had lots of experiences. One time in Washburn, my uncle Louis who was a butcher told George to bring the butcher knife to the house. They had a trap door in the kitchen. Someone was in the cellar so when George came running in the house, he fell rig

We were in Alberta just a few months when Dupont asked dad to run a plant in Joplin Missouri. He worked there for a year but couldn't stand the heat and the employees that didn't want to work, so he didn't want that job. They offered him a job to run the plant at Tacoma, Washington, but he turned it down. He was a first class carpenter and lots of work in Calgary so he stayed there. He really liked Canada.

In the meantime, I was married to Ernest R. Johnston and moved to Medicine Hat. George and Anna stayed with Dad and Ingrid. They lived on a farm in Alderson. when I visited my dad, I used to like to read and when looking through his books I found 10 and 20 dollar bills. I never told anyone about it, but years later I asked George if my father put his money in his books and George said he did. I often wonder if he found all of that money. It was depression at that time and lots of the banks were broke. I guess that's the reason for it because he wasn't a miser. her worked in Calgary and Banff as a carpenter and died in June 1921. He is buried in the Burnsland Cemetery there."

(Pete Bransmo and Ingvold Victol...... thought not finished in her writings)
